What are the causes of fetal distress?
Fetal distress occurs when the fetus does not receive an adequate supply of oxygen. This usually occurs during the delivery process, but it can also develop during the third trimester of pregnancy. While there are several potential causes of fetal distress, physician malpractice can also contribute to the problem. Some relevant errors include:
- Failure to identify decreased fetal movements
- Failure to adequately monitor the fetal heart rate
- Failure to administer adequate prenatal and labor testing
- Failure to identify risk factors and provide treatment effectively
- Prolonging delivery
- Failing to perform a timely cesarean section
