What Is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy is a permanent and non-progressive group of disorders caused by brain injuries that affect muscle control, movement, and posture. This damage can occur before, during, or shortly after birth. The condition often becomes apparent when an infant misses developmental milestones, shows stiff or floppy limbs, has difficulty lifting their head, or experiences delays in crawling. While genetics or unavoidable complications sometimes cause CP, medical negligence is also a well-documented factor.
Preventable Causes of Cerebral Palsy
Medical malpractice can transform an ordinarily safe delivery into a catastrophic brain injury.
Common Medical Errors
- Oxygen Deprivation (Birth Asphyxia) – Providers who ignore fetal distress or delay intervention risk hypoxic brain damage.
- Delayed Cesarean Section – Prolonged labor or mal-positioned babies demand prompt C-sections. Hesitation can cost precious oxygen.
- Improper Use of Forceps or Vacuum – Excessive force or misplacement can fracture skull bones and injure delicate brain tissue.
- Untreated Fetal Distress – Failure to react to a prolapsed cord, placental abruption, or abnormal heart tracings denies the baby oxygen.
- Maternal Infections – Missing or mismanaging Group B strep or chorioamnionitis can trigger newborn brain inflammation.
Uncommon or Overlooked Errors
- Severe Jaundice (Kernicterus) not treated promptly can poison brain tissue.
- Medication or Anesthesia Mistakes such as excessive Pitocin may create hyper-contractions and fetal hypoxia.
- Undiagnosed Uterine Rupture or Placental Failure deprives the fetus of blood flow in minutes.
- Post-Birth Negligence like dropping a newborn or delaying resuscitation inflicts avoidable trauma.
Many of these tragedies would never occur with vigilant care. If any sound familiar, your family deserves accountability.
