Kerry D. Staton, a founding partner of Schochor, Staton, Goldberg, and Cardea, P.A. will receive the 2018 Leadership in Law Award from The Daily Record in recognition of his outstanding legal work and personal dedication to the Maryland community.

The Leadership in Law Award has been presented annually to outstanding members of the Maryland legal community since 2001.  The honor showcases the integrity, commitment, and accomplishments of legal professionals who serve their community through superb legal service, mentoring, and community outreach.

Practicing law since 1980, Mr. Staton combines his knowledge and experience of the law with an unwavering dedication to ensuring that justice is provided to those who are injured—regardless of their socio-economic background.

As a plaintiff’s attorney in medical malpractice and personal injury matters, Mr. Staton has received numerous awards associated with those in the highest echelons of the legal profession.

Mr. Staton was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, membership in which is limited to the top one percent of attorneys in each state.  Among other accolades, Mr. Staton was named 2018 Baltimore Medical Malpractice Law – Plaintiffs “Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers®.  The prestigious award is presented to only a single lawyer in each practice and designated metropolitan area each year.  He previously received the same honor in 2013.

Mr. Staton also serves as a Commissioner on the Attorney Grievance Commission and provides tireless service to the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS), an organization that provides legal help to low income citizens.  He has lectured and taught widely and has offered testimony to legislators on issues of law, medicine, and tort reform.

A Lifetime Helping Those In Need

As with outstanding professionals in any field, awards and achievements are not only honors that point to accomplishment but markers of a dedication that runs deeper than time at the office or winning the next case.

Mr. Staton relates a poignant legal matter that he once handled. In that case, a middle-aged woman was left paralyzed on one side of her body after a doctor punctured the carotid artery in her neck, mistaking it for a mass he sought to biopsy. The physician was judgment-proof—he carried no malpractice insurance and had no assets.

Although acknowledging there could be no monetary award, his client, now permanently disabled and unable to work, wanted the justice of a verdict—to know “her plight didn’t go ignored.”  Engaging an expert witness, Mr. Staton took the case to trial and obtained a verdict in her favor. Unable to pay any legal fee, the woman sent Mr. Staton what she could—a bouquet of flowers.  Mr. Staton reflects, “I will always remember that as the best fee I ever got.”

Mr. Staton’s personal understanding of the despair and tragedy of those who suffer irreversible injury after medical malpractice came early.  When physicians failed to order a critical test prior to surgery, his mother suffered permanent and severe brain damage after the procedure, leaving her in a nursing facility until she passed just a few years later, while still in her 50’s.

For his clients and community, Mr. Staton personifies the spirit of the law that seeks to correct injury caused by wrongdoing.  With quiet decency and exceptional legal skill, Mr. Staton strives to obtain justice and provide positive support to clients who suffer injury due to the negligence or actions of others.

Mr. Staton and other recipients of the 2018 Leadership in Law Award will be honored at the annual Leadership in Law celebration event on May 17, 2018 at the BWI Hilton.
