Diabetes affects more than 30 million people—but more than 25% of people with diabetes don’t even know they have it. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, diabetes can have debilitating and deadly complications. People with diabetes have twice the risk of heart disease and stroke. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, limb amputations, and adult-onset blindness.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC)’s recent report on diabetes notes that proper testing and treatment practices are the only way to avoid diabetes’ most severe complications. The CDC recommends specific tests and preventative care practices, including annual foot and eye exams, blood tests, and diabetes self-management classes. But in Maryland and Washington DC, nearly 25% of people diagnosed with diabetes are not getting the recommended care of blood tests and foot exams and almost 50% are not getting the critical education provided in self-management classes.
