Learn more about sepsis
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define sepsis as “a complication caused by the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to an infection.” When the body senses an infection, it releases immune chemicals into the bloodstream. These chemicals can cause relaxation of blood vessels within the body, leading to the development of dangerous low blood pressure. The blood is not able to adequately flow through the arteries and veins, which deprives the organs and brain of necessary oxygen and nutrients.
Sepsis can occur at any time, in response to any level of infection; but it is most commonly associated with conditions like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and peritonitis. Some of the germs often associated with sepsis include staph, E.coli, and strep.
