Phillip Federico discusses a case where hernia repair surgery goes terribly wrong for one man. In this instance, during a typically low-risk procedure, the surgeon inadvertently pierces a hole in the bowel of the patient and doesn’t realize it. The patient is sent home but comes back to the hospital days later complaining of pain. He’s admitted to the hospital and the next day emergency surgery is performed, but by then he has had multi-organ failure and dies.
